Roll On Roll Off WharfThe original design of the wharf protruded some 25 metres beyond the existing wharf structure. Brisbane Port Authorities let the contract to remove Ro Ro Wharf back to the alignment of the main facility. The structure consisted of a 500mm thick reinforced concrete deck, supported on 73 steel hexagonal piles 600mm in diameter. The contract called for the removal of the concrete decking without the concrete spoils polluting the river bed (contracts had already been awarded for dredging of seabed levels by others on completion). The steel piles had to be cut 6 metres below seabed levels. To do this, the piles had to be excavated internally. This allowed the casings to be cut using either Oxy-LP equipment or high pressure water & grit cutting. The piles were extracted, after cutting, using a 90tonne Pin Jib Crane. The decking was removed using an excavator fitted with a Krupp 600 hydraulic hammer.Steelfloating bins were positioned under the decking to catch the concrete rubble. Contract duration - 3 months.
